Tropical Charms of Gili Air Island

Published 03 September 2017

This paradise isle falls between Gili Trawangan’s raging party scene and Gili Meno’s sleepy island vibe. For many travelers Gili Air got it just right. There is enough buzz and fun activities to do plus a splash of nightlife to top it all off. Gili Air epitomizes your perfect little getaway fantasy. It has pristine white sandy beaches, the ocean washing its shores, has more shades of turquoise than you can count and the majestic Rinjani volcano looms on Lombok in the background.

The list of superlatives doesn’t end there. There is now a good number of cafes to grab a quality meal, premium coffee or sunset drink and you can still find a perfectly quiet corner to catch up on your reading. In the ‘sandy feet, salty hair style’, do not miss out on a photo opportunity to snap a signature” Gili Air pic on an ocean swing – at its most picturesque at mid tide.

The white-sand beaches here are arguably the best of the Gili bunch.

The best way to explore the island is on foot, or better yet – bike around! Even though the roads zigzagging the island are still more sandy than paved, it is super fun pedaling an old school bike around. The trio of Gili Islands have a ban in place on all motorized vehicles and the quietness is deafening. Look no further than Gili Air if you need to relax, reset and laze around under the tropical sun.

This little gem of an island won’t disappoint the restless ones either. You can snorkel with turtles, dive with reef sharks, walk barefoot and soak up the vitamin D on the white glistening sands or play in the warm Indian Ocean. If you really can’t stay still, run around the 5km perimeter of the island or practice your headstands at Mandala Yoga.

Bike around and explore the motorized vehicle free isle!

Wahah Villas
Book via AirBnb – Wahah Villas Gili Air

Wahah Villas offer a perfect sanctuary.

Kick back and enjoy a drink by your very private pool.

The traditional Javanese “Limasans” – enjoy Gili like royalty.

Situated right at the very center of the island, the two charming Limasan style villas offer a strategic location for all your mini island explorations.

Wahah is going to be your home far away from home. A cozy compound filled with light and lush tropical vegetation offers two adjacent two-bedroom villas. But not just any random villas!

This concept won us over with its focus on presenting Indonesian heritage architecture at its best. The unique teak wood houses were handpicked in Java, dismantled and brought to the Gili site and reassembled. The Limasans used to be built as homes for Javanese royalty and you will certainly feel as such while staying there.

They offer old time charm, but new, modern amenities, king size beds and stylish outdoor tropical bathrooms. Each villa features an open spacious living area, fully equipped kitchen and a large pool. Their staff are super friendly and ready to help with planning your perfect Gili itinerary.

Mandala-blue Yoga

The only Yoga Studio with ocean views.

Try some SUP yoga to improve your core strength & balance.

With its perfect beach front location, classes running trough out the day and a laidback, charismatic owner/instructor Maite, this yoga abode charmed us the most.

They offer a variety of classes such as popular Vinyasa, Ashtanga, Flyhigh Yoga and a definite must is a SUP yoga for an extra floaty challenge. Plus we can’t say this often enough – THE views at Mandala are just unparalleled! Rinjani Volcano over on Lombok attracts dramatic fluffy clouds and you overlook the pristine turquoise waters, while in down-dog. There is also something about Yoga – it is designed to be practiced outside. You get the same physical benefits, but your mind clears like in no city yoga studio.

They also have a small Yoga Goodies shack just outside the semi-open studio and work in conjunction with the adjacent Blue Marine Dive Resort. You can calm your mind in a class and go straight into the deep, diving totally anxiety free.
