The Tented Beachside Luxury Of Menjangan Dynasty Resort

Published 01 March 2017

In September last year, the manifestation of an eco-friendly, tented, boutique retreat began luring visitors to Bali’s far northwest corner, firmly pegging itself as a destination not only for divers and outdoor enthusiasts, but also for those wishing to experience ‘glamping’ at a whole new level of luxury. In fact, when you encounter the magic of this place, it’s quite possible that you will never want to stay anywhere else.

The Resort sits within the natural splendour of Banyuwedang Bay.

Enveloped deep within the tranquil ambience of Bali’s innate beauty, Menjangan Dynasty Resort, Beach Camp and Dive Centre rests beside the gentle waters of Banyuwedang Bay on the outer perimeter of the island’s most magnificent, untouched wilderness – The West Bali National Park. Here, 24 safari-style tented rooms, four tented villas, a restaurant and barefoot beach club, a spa, two swimming pools and a PADI dive centre exist in harmony with the natural splendour of an extraordinary location.

Glorious views extend across a mangrove-entwined coastline to the lowland forests of the national park, the tiny island of Menjangan, the craggy folds of Bali Barat’s north-facing ridges and Java’s towering Mt Raung. Crystalline waters splash upon the tranquil ‘Pasir Putih’ white-sand beach and brilliant sunsets colour the sky. Guests at the Resort can enjoy a close-to-nature yet luxurious ‘glamping’ experience, combined with delicious cuisine, intimate dining, pampering spa treatments and the opportunity to interact with nature through a wide range of land and sea activities, including snorkelling & diving with the on-site ‘Bali Hai Diving Academy’, hiking, bird-watching and wildlife sighting.

The standalone tented rooms feature glass doors and alfresco decks.

The romance of sleeping under canvas meets modern technology and home comforts.

At Menjangan Dynasty Resort, the romance of sleeping under canvas meets modern technology and home comforts. The tents were created to the highest standards in South Africa from robust double-skinned canvas, and their cool air-conditioned interiors cleverly capture the mood of the classic safari club with glass doors, native materials and mellow colours. The serenity of the great outdoors can be enjoyed from alfresco decks, while each of the one and two bedroom cliff-top tented villas has the additional indulgence of a private pool. Crafted in sustainable bamboo and ‘alang-alang’ thatch, the communal structures at the Resort flourish with five-star flair. A multi-purpose wantilan pavilion, bordered by wedding lawns, is perfect for yoga retreats and other events. In fact, if you have ever dreamed of a fairytale Bali wedding, this is a venue that promises you something truly special.

The Resort’s ‘Pasir Putih Spa by Ambiente’ supports the glamping theme with a cliff-top Spa Tent – the only one of its kind in Bali, as well as a deck for reflexology, manicures & pedicures, and two self-contained waterfront Spa Pods. Designed for couples, each of the pods is a dreamy pavilion, fashioned in bamboo and blessed with awe-inspiring views across Banyuwedang Bay.

Pasir Putih Beach Club Restaurant & Bar is housed within an open-sided bamboo edifice.

The main pool is elevated above the bay.

Everyone is welcome at ‘Pasir Putih Beach Club Restaurant & Bar’ – you don’t have to be a guest at the resort. Housed within an open-sided edifice, a striking framework of bamboo columns and beams creates an interesting play of vertical, horizontal and diagonal lines, which twist, intensify and surprise under the organic curves of the soaring grass roof. Furnishings include hanging lanterns, bamboo chairs, and blond-wood tables with a distressed-antique finish – a simple rustic style that was carefully chosen to ensure that nothing would detract from the spectacular vista. This casual elegance spills out on to the sand with shaded cabanas, complemented by chillout music and a joyous carefree vibe. Adjacent to the bar is a beachside swimming pool fed by an ornamental waterfall. Guests can also enjoy swimming in the calm turquoise sea or have fun kayaking, canoeing, and stand-up paddle boarding, using the facilities of the water sports centre. The easygoing, seaside spirit here is exemplified with a tasty beach club fare of ‘Tapas to Share’, while the restaurant’s all-day dining menu of Western and Asian cuisine is supported by a daily ‘specials’ board, which enables the chefs to take advantage of the seasonal, fresh local produce.

During the balmy Bali evenings, Pasir Putih takes on a particularly peaceful persona, enhanced by starlit skies, the warm glow of candles in the sand, the nocturnal sounds of nature, and the murmur of the waves. Romantic dinners à deux are a specialty of the resort, relished by couples and honeymooners who are invited to dine wherever they wish – under the tamarind trees, perhaps, or right beside the water’s edge for an intimate toes-in-the sand experience. Ahhh bliss!
