Hidden away in Pererenan, near Canggu, is a majestic property known as the Chalina Estate.

Here, on 5,300 square metres of land, a palatial villa with a 30-metre swimming pool as its centrepiece offers accommodation for up to 26 guests in seven luxurious bedrooms and a bunk room. The villa rests in an expansive garden bordering the gentle Pangi River, while the classic Balinese architecture showcases alang-alang thatched roofs, yellow ‘paras’ sandstone walls, and floors of polished terrazzo, teak and bengkirai wood. Everything about the villa is big and beautiful; soft furnishings follow a lavender theme, while a collection of striking artwork by the owner will mesmerise you with its remarkable radiance. If you visit this splendid riverside property, you will be bombarded with delights and surprises, including glorious views of the rice terraces, sunsets, and on a clear day, Mt Batukaru, the island’s second highest volcano,

Chalina’s abundance of space and natural beauty makes it the perfect venue for weddings, parties and special events for up to 120 people. Guests can spill out on to the smooth manicured lawns, which are great for barbeques and Balinese cultural performances. The serene riverside setting and the mountain views also makes it ideal for yoga and spiritual retreats.

The villa’s grand entranceway will bring you directly into the garden, past lily ponds and eye-catching water features to a large open-sided living pavilion, furnished with a huge sofa. On an elevated section within the same pavilion is a long dining table and ten funky wicker chairs crafted in shades of purple and lavender. This is a place where every comfort is considered and five-star personal butler service is of the essence. A private chef is on hand to prepare delicious Asian and Western dishes, which will leave you free to relax and indulge in the lovely surroundings and magical sunsets.

Another pavilion is home to an air-conditioned lounge, designed for entertaining with its comfy daybeds and black granite bar. This pavilion has concertina doors that open to two terraces, one of which is looks down over the river, while the other offers alfresco dining under the shelter of a pergola draped in flowering creepers.
Flaunting spicy, exotic names – Ginger and Cinnamon, Saffron and Amber – four of the bedrooms, including the two lavish master suites, can be found in the main building, which runs the length of the pool and features a colonnaded walkway at the back lined with dramatic water spouts and statues within an ornamental pond. On the upper floor, the Saffron master suite is characterised by a toe-warming wooden floor and big windows designed to maximise the fabulous vista. A precious feature here is the large and sheltered balcony at the front, which commands views in two directions of the rice fields and the mountains. Three more guestrooms, named Paprika, Clove and Vertyver are housed in separate, self-contained garden pavilions; four-poster beds are swathed in floaty muslin drapes, and elegant teak furniture is complemented by more of the owner’s captivating artwork.

The estate’s gorgeous garden is planted with towering coconut palms, red trunked lipstick palms, and sweet scented frangipani trees. Immaculate lawns roll down to the river, while the impressive swimming pool takes pride of place, complete with a bale pavilion that extends on a deck and appears to float upon the water. What a magical spot for a massage or a wedding ceremony!

Suitable for all interests and all ages – from extended families to groups of friends – Chalina Estate is truly a place to escape and get lost in the tranquillity.
