Ask any travelling surfer in the world to list their all time favourite waves and spots on Bali’s Bukit peninsula will make the top ten every time, with names like Padang Padang, Dreamland, Uluwatu and Balangan flowing off their tongues like sea spray in an off-shore breeze. It’s at that very Balangan Beach that stands Casa de Balangan, one of the best and, more importantly, most reasonably priced accommodations in the area. Standing on high ground just a 300-metre walk from the sand, this three-storey luxury villa comes fully staffed and has incredible ocean views thrown in for good measure, allowing guests to enjoy fantastic sunsets, and for the surfers in the family, a constant view of when the good sets come rolling in.

Fashioned in a modern Bali style and built with outdoor living high on the agenda, the three-bedroom villa captures a different atmosphere with each level. On the ground floor is a huge living and dining room with an integrated modern kitchen, as well as a queen-sized guest room, both of which lead out to an attractive walled garden and the centrepiece 12-metre swimming pool. This is bordered by a pool deck with BBQ and bar area, and an alfresco living and dining pavilion, which in turn is crowned with a rooftop terrace and a gazebo accessed by a spiral staircase.

The first floor houses the master suite and a twin-bed guestroom (they can easily be made into a king), both of which have balconies and unparalleled access to those splendid ocean views. The master suite is vast, with its own sitting area and a grand bathroom as well as an adjoining room which would be ideal for a couple of small children, making the whole villa great for families.

Going up one more flight of stairs to the second floor, there’s a magnificent outdoor rooftop terrace with tables, chairs and sofas that nearly cover the entire space. The rooftop offers even more dramatic views. There’s also a large air-conditioned sitting room with panorama inducing windows on four sides, a TV, DVD player, mini fridge, small dining table and a large L-shaped sofa which can be converted to a bed for two extra kids, making an extra ‘overflow bedroom’, just for good measure.

From this wonderful vantage point, the views extend along the nearby beaches and to Bali’s sunset coast to the north. The scene is particularly spectacular at night enhanced by the lights of Kuta, Seminyak and Canggu. On a clear day, the awesome vista takes in the chain of volcanoes from the mighty Mt Agung in the east to the distant peaks of Java in the west.

Being fully staffed, guests don’t have to lift a finger (except to pull out some cash for some well-earned gratuities upon leaving) and Casa Del Balangan’s chef can prepare and cook anything from snacks to casual lunches to three-course dinners, or other requests as required. A suggestion menu of international and local dishes is available and special dietary requirements are no problem. Simply let the staff know what you would like to eat and they will take care of all the grocery shopping, as well as keeping the fridge well stocked with cold drinks.

A great family villa, Casa de Balangan’s location near Bali’s best beaches makes it an ideal playground for days on the sand with the kids, or simply staying at home lounging by the pool. It’s also an equally impressive home base from where to explore the rich attractions of Bali, and a short walk to the waves with board under the arm for getting in touch with what surfers do best – riding those bucket-list Bukit waves.
