Words & Photos:

Let your tastebuds discover eateries where you’ll find all the great comfort foods, but can easily take your fussy vegan friend as well. Here is FRV’s healthy-ish hit list of new cafes on the Bali block.

Gypsy Bali

There are cafes and then there is Gypsy Café. The special concept here is about sourcing only 100% local, fresh ingredients and turning them into a culinary experience you won’t find anywhere else.

The menu was carefully designed by a famous chef, forged in the kitchen of a Michelin star restaurant. Do we need to say more? You know you are in good hands, the moment you enter. Restaurateur Kevin and Chef Robin have been around the Café block and know exactly how to play this game. They teamed up to bring their expertise from Canada to Bali, so get ready to be impressed!

Order their superior Smashed Avo toast and the colorful Smoothie bowls for breakfast and then carnivores move onto a Vietnamese sandwich, and herbivores to Beets by Rob Salad for lunch.

But their signature area is definitely seafood. Chef Robin himself makes his daily trips to Jimbaran fish market to source only the finest quality for you.

Order one of Gypsy’s creative cocktails, sit back and nosh on the freshest catches of the day. We highly recommend the Sea Platter to share – and it’s guaranteed your taste buds will be blown away.

Gypsy Cafe has got this clean, modern contemporary design about it, but a very bohemian, relaxed atmosphere. The food here tastes so next level, that just one visit will turn you into a loyal regular “Gypsy”!

The Nest Home Cafe

The Nest Home Cafe is a happy place that Berawa-ites definitely needed! A concept where comfort food, excellent full-bodied, chocolaty coffee meets an inspiring, creative co-working space.

You are welcome to “nest” here with your laptop as long as you want! Keep yourself properly caffeinated, munch on their desserts and keep the creative ideas flowing.

This place also serves a well-crafted selection of all-day breakfasts. Try their Huevos Motulenos for breaky – baked eggs served on a bean taste covered green tortilla, garnished with tortilla chips. Don’t miss out on their home style Tomato Soup with sour cream, crunchy sweet apple salad or filling Grilled Cheese.

You’ll find this inspiring cafe in the newly built Canggu Square complex.

Nest has got a very clean, minimal interior, but it doesn’t feel sterile. Its walls are painted in white and there is a large floor to ceiling window, filling the space with natural light. There is one big community table in the center and a few other spots, making it very homey and cozy.

They also organize Tuesday Art Shows and display a collection of art works by different artists, changing the artworks every few weeks, so you’ll always find something new and inspiring at The Nest Home Cafe.

Kinoa Bali

Kinoa Bali is a gem of a little, cute café hiding tucked away in the middle of Perenenan’s unspoiled rice paddies. There’s an unpretentious vibe and an inventive menu comprising of fresh, healthy foods packed with great flavors, and as locally sourced as possible.

Paradise for vegetarians and the gluten free crowd, but meat lovers will rejoice as well. They’ve got meat sourced from the Bali highlands, free range, grass fed and ethically treated. Kinoa is all about a clean eating concept, without compromising on taste.

They serve a popular all day breakfast and freshly tossed salads. Kinoa offers in-house made “Slow Juices” made out of organic, fully ripened fruits. They don’t add any refined sugar, water or ice and they are produced fresh daily. Don’t miss out on one of the non-dairy smoothies – the Golden Beverage tastes especially energizing.
What makes this place even more of a find is the desserts they serve – oh-so-scrummy! Gluten free, raw cakes created by talented “Thyme and Caramel” (@thymeandcaramel). Brownie & Cheescake are such “rockstars” in their own right, they give Kinoa extra credit to visit.

Now let’s talk coffee – the Sulawesi/Bali/Papua authentic aromatic blend translates especially great with their in-house made coconut milk.
Kinoa also crafts pretty instagrammable concoctions, such as Red Velvet or Tumeric Lattes. We did mention the creamy texture and velvety flavour of their raw desserts, right? So don’t forget to pair your cuppa with one!

In The Raw

Inspired by the hyper popular NYC Juice Press Co., In The Raw brings organic, raw juice, food and ‘grab and goes’ to Canggu. In the Raw café doesn’t cut corners, they use only organic produce where possible, make fresh batches every day and don’t water the juices down one bit. Our taste buds can vouch that you won’t find better quality cold pressed juices in Bali.

Located conveniently in the middle of the Batu Bolong Plaza, the café serves as a cool hub for the health conscious Gu crowd.

You’ll see insanely good looking, glowing people running in and out (well – further proof, there must be something about the cold pressed juices!) Grab one to go or relax on the shaded porch – the best place for Canggu people watching. They’ve also got plenty of raw foods options – freshly tossed salads, nori rolls, thick and creamy smoothies and popular smoothie bowls. Definitely don’t forget to leave room for decadently tasty rawsome desserts and energy balls.

You can also go all in and order one of their signature juice cleanses. They are fun and colourful, as they can customize them to your liking. You won’t be chugging down tedious, monotonous juice day in day out. Give your body a break, juice it up and you’ll be in superman mode in no time. Their motto is work hard, play hard, cleanse, repeat. If you bump into a Brit with a thick NYC accent, pick his brain – he knows everything and anything there is to know about cold press juicing.

PS: Bonus for quality juice & pup lovers – don’t forget to pet the gorgeous wolfdog!

Jungle Bali

Jungle Bali is a full-blown café during the day serving healthy-ish, crafty breakfast nosh and show stopping rice paddy views on the side. It is also a home to a really strong espresso that comes served with palm trees on top – so fire up your Instagrams!

Their Eggs Benedict come served with a generous portion of buttery avocado slices and a big portion of a crunchy salad. The beautiful layered chia seed pudding topped with colorful tropical fruits looks almost too pretty to eat and oh my – they’ve got real, in-house made glazed Italian donuts. We promise you, you’ll go nuts for their donuts.

Jungle transforms into a casual authentic Italian pizza place at night. It’s their specialty and signature dish rolled into one. The Italian team came up with a secret flour mix, that makes the pizza super easy to digest. They’ve got the wood fired oven, ensuring the authentic thin, crispy dough, topped with premium Italian ingredients.

Location, location, location; the café has got a super relaxing atmosphere, so come here whenever you need some seriously excellent food and a break from the South Bali buzz. And did we mention how aromatic the coffee is?
