Giving the utmost in service to make your stay memorable

The most talked about new hotel in Jakarta.

As a seasoned traveller I am quite familiar with the Raffles Hotel name. Every establishment in their ever-growing family has its own individual personality with its own story to share. The story of Raffles Jakarta started with the hotel owner (who is also one of the most successful entrepreneurs in Indonesia), Mr. Ciputra, a man with a high admiration for his very good friend, artist Hendra Gunawan. Renown as one Indonesian five big maestros of modern painting, Hendra’s vibrant colours and movements are implemented as an iconic thread throughout the hotel’s interiors.

My admiration for this new hotel started when the bellboy greeted me not just with a warm welcome, but also with my full name. It grew even more when I stepped into the majestic lobby to see all the beauty inside. An immediate overwhelming sense of grandeur comes from a high ceiling covered in onyx and adorned by a colourful collection of hand-blown glass, juxtaposed against a gigantic mural depicting one of Hendra Gunawan’s most famous paintings, Menyusui 2 (Breastfeeding 2). It’s the type of lobby and painting where you just want to linger and admire.

If you have stayed in any Raffles hotels before, then you will know about their great butler service. Mine came to greet me at the lobby and continued with a discreet and hassle-free check in process in my suite. He also showed me around the suite’s facilities and told me to contact him for any needs or arrangements. The suite itself was quite impressive! With 97sqm, this spacious corner suite, known as Artist Suite, is divided into a living room area, a bedroom and a large bathroom with a bathtub facing Jakarta’s skyline. The continuation of Hendra Gunawan’s artwork can also be seen in the room as it is integrated into the carpet and the stone relief, like the one nestled above the tub. Simply said, this is one fabulous suite!

There are many things that you can do while staying in this hotel. For dining, the Arts Café on the first floor is a very satisfying coffee shop. Designed in the same manner as the hotel itself, Arts Café really restored my hope in hotel food. The creativity shown here is in balance with the delicious taste, and it’s a place where I see a five star hotel of its food. Highlights here include the modern version of Singapore chili crab served with a charcoaled black bun, that in my personal opinion should be the signature dish of the restaurant. The fun part of dining here is that you get a series of superb mini a la minute dishes that come with your buffet options. Sunday brunch at Arts Cafe is proving to be a new favourite among Jakartans.

For some leisure time, I took my iPad poolside while enjoying the skyline, where they also have a jogging track with a beautifully manicured garden. Another interesting part about the hotel is the fact that you can visit the Artpreneur area, which consists of an opera house with great Broadway shows (like the upcoming The Sound of Music), a private art museum featuring Ciputra’s amazing collection, and an art gallery that has various exhibitions every now and then. However, if you think that all of these are kind of overwhelming then just go to the semi-private quiet corner inside the Writer’s Bar and order yourself a fruity Jakarta Sling while enjoying the beauty of the crystal chandeliers that cascade down from the ceiling like a waterfall.

My personal comment on this hotel: I wish I could stay forever.
