Char Char Bar & Grill is a new restaurant on Bali’s famed ‘Eats Street’, Jalan Laksmana, Oberoi, Seminyak. David Trauts heads upstairs to try it out.

Char Char Bar & Grill begins right on the street. The front façade features a set of steps creating a tiered terrace from the first floor down to street level where guests can sit overlooking the buzz of the street while dining, drinking and chatting. This is a fun, animated spot to see the world pass by and has become an instant hit with diners.

Besides the terrace, the two-storey building is air-conditioned and non-smoking downstairs and is open to the sky on the second level upstairs with a retractable roof providing protection in inclement weather. Guests can either walk up the central staircase inside or go up the ramp to the second floor and the main dining area. Parking is a breeze with valet parking in the state-of-the-art parking station at the rear where ample parking can also be found for motorbikes.

Char Char has a Pacific Rim / Ring of Fire cuisine, with dishes gleaned from around the region, and Chef Jason Lee from Singapore, with loads of experience from around the world, is heading up the very modern kitchens.

The menu is large and features a variety of choices. The number of mains dishes on the menu is almost bewildering and come from selections called First Flavours (entrees), Neptune’s Catch (seafood) and Meat & Poultry, which feature just about every possible way meats and seafood could be cooked. However, the main act for me starts at the Char Char Fire Walker page. Guests can choose some of the best meats and fish available on the island directly from the showcase display for very reasonable prices which are then cooked the way you desire. A selection of freshly-cooked vegetables and delicious salads are available from the salad bar surrounding the central Mongolian grill. For people looking for a no-fuss, excellent dinner, the Fire Walker is the place to begin your Char Char experience. Another great option is the Char-Char Signature Selection page, which is another list of tasty dishes.

Succulent Churrasco Kebabs are an excellent choice and the Mongolian grill provides a little bit of theatrics watching the chefs, all three of them, cook your dish.

Dining under the stars at night in the romantically-lit space upstairs, in the non-smoking and air-conditioned area perfect for families downstairs, or hanging out on the terrace overlooking the street with your buddies, Char Char has all options covered.

It’s a cool, organized and architectural designed space that offers some of the tastiest food at very affordable prices on the Eats Street strip. You can’t beat the service too. This restaurant is set to make another grand statement for the Balinesia group on Bali’s premier dining street.

Char Char Bar and Grill was created by Balinesia, the people who helped to bring Eats Street to the forefront of Bali dining with two of the most popular restaurants on it, Rumours and Ultimo. Char Char is Balinesia’s third restaurant on Jalan Oberoi, it’s just down the road from the other two and is a continuation of the restaurant heritage of almost 20 years since the group opened their first fine-dining restaurant, Toscana, in Kemang, Jakarta in 1996.
