Kuala Lumpur is a modern city boasting skyscrapers, exotic spas, fine dining restaurants and modern international hotels, but some 20 kilometres away from the hustle and bustle of city life, a man-made lagoon and a luxurious five star resort hotel, with appealing aesthetics, outstanding fixtures, amenities and enhanced technology is the ideal hideout for an exotic holiday.

It isn’t just the Sunway Lagoon theme park with its man-made surf pool and other fun-filled recreational facilities that attract the young at heart, but the overall concept of Sunway Resort Hotel & Spa which was turned from an abandoned tin mining pool into an iconic integrated “Resort-within-a-City” destination that truly fascinates one’s imagination. It’s the result of hard work by a man called Tan Sri Jeffrey Cheah and his team.

When FRV was invited to check out one of the hotel’s themed suites, the Club Executive Arabian, we couldn’t help but be made to feel like we are enjoying the lifestyle of a cash-rich oil sheikh. The room has a serene union of Moorish refinement and inspiration with décor reminiscent of the tales of the Arabian Nights.

Each room is embodied by sheer billowing curtains, rich detailing and furnishings that depict the splendour and mysticism of the Middle East. A luxurious, oversized king size bed with a 10cm thick “feather-bed” topped mattress, feather down duvet, cotton-rich linens and hypo-allergenic pillows are all a welcoming sight after a whole day of shopping and fun time at the theme park for visitors to Sunway City, located just off the Federal Highway.

To elevate the guest experience, Finezzo, Ristretto and Decafeinator – some of the best blends of coffee from Central America and Italy – are served in the rooms from special coffee machines, while the bathroom features Lanvin bath amenities, manufactured and imported from Germany, which makes one feel refreshed after a hot bath.

If that’s not enough to pamper yourself on a well-deserved holiday, a short walk away, within a lush, green, man-made tropical enclave, is the world renowned Mandara Spa, managed by spa director, Janice Flamer-Caldera, whose main task is to make sure that you enjoy every moment of the Mandara touch. An hour’s massage has the magic of elevating the body, mind and soul to a state of inner peace and calm, not to mention that the exhilarating aroma of lemongrass in oil burners and the artful synthesis of soothing sounds also create a welcoming mood to guests.

There is a choice of any of Mandara Spa’s four signature massage oil blends – the Mandara Oil (Sandalwood, Patchouli, Cananga and Ylang-Ylang Oils), Island Spice (a spicy mix of Clove, Ginger and Nutmeg oils to stimulate, revitalise and brighten your spirits), Harmony (Mandarin, Lavender and Bergamot oils) and Tranquility (a stress reducing blend of Lavender, Vetiver and Cananga oils).

My wife picked the Mandara Oil, which is both romantic and uplifting, while I went for the Tranquility blend, which is applied to reduce stress and to impart a sense of serenity. It is hard to leave the place without feeling rejuvenated, thanks to the masseur, who hails from the state of Sabah in East Malaysia. According to Caldera, she was trained by the Mandara Spa Academy in Sabah. Half of the other 12 therapists were invited from Bali to work here.

Living like a Sheikh is one thing, but what about dining like the Emperor of China? The stay at Sunway Resort Hotel & Spa is incomplete without dining at the West Lake Garden Chinese Restaurant located at the Lobby Level of the hotel. Here is where one gets to experience the creations of Chinese Master Chef, Chan Choo Kean. After all, Malaysia (or formerly Malaya) was once upon a time the meeting point between Arab and Chinese traders long before oil was discovered in the Middle East.

Among his signature dishes is the West Lake Garden Three Combination, which brings together the pot-sticker, prawn with Mongolian sauce & diced seafood with cheese in a golden cup. One should also try his crispy leg of duck with abalone sauce, the baked cod fish with shimeji mushroom in savoury sauce, and Chef’s ‘Jiang Xi’ vermicelli with sliced chicken in yam herbal soup.

Honeymooners would love the treatment they receive. Even businessmen will find the Club Lounge a great place to work in. It offers business class conveniences with privileges ranging from complimentary breakfasts, light refreshments, evening cocktails and canapés, to The Club concierge service, private check-in and check-out facilities, as well as boardroom and private lounge facilities.

For an exotic experience, we recommend you the Villas at Sunway Resort Hotel & Spa. Living like a Sheikh and dining like an Emperor has never been so good.
